Japan's MSDF Plans Joint Drill With USS Ronald Reagan

Japan's MSDF Plans Joint Drill With USS Ronald Reagan

The statement came in response to the joint military exercises conducted by the USA and Japan, in which Japanese fighter pilots, flying high-tech F-15 jets, trained with both the USS Carl Vinson and USS Ronald Reagan American aircraft carriers.

Separately the US Treasury also hit a number of North Korean firms and two Russian companies trading with the country with economic sanctions.

This photo exercise comes amid high tensions after North Korea has conducted several missile tests in recent months, including one on Monday that landed off the western coast of Japan.

The United States has led the efforts to bring further sanctions to punish the North and is urging China, Pyongyang's main sponsor, to play a greater role in applying pressure on the unpredictable regime of Kim Jong-un.

Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) plans to conduct soon a joint drill with the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, Japan's Jiji Press reported Japanese government sources as saying on Wednesday.

The USS Ronald Reagan and USS Carl Vinson strike groups operated in formation alongside Japanese forces in waters near the Korean peninsula Thursday, marking the largest display yet of naval power in response to North Korea's recent ballistic missile tests.

The post United States carriers in Sea of Japan in show of force to North Korea appeared first on The Independent Uganda:.

South Korea's new liberal president, Moon Jae-in, who took office on May 10, has taken a more conciliatory line than Abe, pledging to engage with his reclusive neighbor in dialogue.

American aircraft carriers, destroyers and submarines are now sailing the Sea of Japan, in addition to Japan's Self-Defense Forces.

North Korea claimed the United States will not change its ambition to "win military dominance over the Asia-Pacific region".

Meanwhile, the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is also headed to the Western Pacific, though Navy officials say it is unlikely that three carriers will remain in the region for long.

"The United States would need about 1,000 Tomahawk and other missiles to temporarily neutralize North Korea's underground bases in an initial attack", said Yoji Koda, a former commander in chief of the Self-Defense Fleet.
