Iran calls missile attack on Syria militants a wider warning

Iran calls missile attack on Syria militants a wider warning

As reporter Anshel Pfeffer observes, this is a "major development" and constitutes the "first operational use of mid-range missiles by Iran since war with Iraq".

The Guards fired six missiles from the west of Iran across the border and into Syria's mostly IS-held Deir Ezzor province, targeting an IS command base, they said earlier.

Syrian opposition activist Omar Abu Laila, who is based in Germany but closely follows events in his native Deir el-Zour, said two Iranian missiles fell near and inside the eastern town of Mayadeen, an Islamic State stronghold.

The attack came in the wake of a twin attack carried out by IS on Iran's Parliament and the Mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in the capital Tehran on June 7, killing 17 and injuring dozens others.

The attacks marked the first time that ISIS, a Sunni Muslim group fighting Iranian-backed militias in Syria, has claimed responsibility for an attack in Iran.

"If the Iranians were trying to show their capabilities and to signal to Israel and to the Americans that these missiles are operational, the result was rather different", Channel 2 analyst Ehud Yaari said.

In fact, it is more likely that the Iranian Regime attempted to attack this province, without caring who would get hurt, because they wanted control of it.

First they see "Questions and anger after mother killed by police" on page one about the shooting by police of Charleena Lyles . Police say 34-year-old Steven McNew and 32-year-old Jason Anderson were the officers who shot Charleena Lyles on Sunday.

Announcing the attack, the Guards insisted "many terrorists" were killed and their weapons were destroyed within the strike.

The United States said the Syrian army plane shot down on Sunday had dropped bombs near fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a US -backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters battling to capture the city of Raqqa from IS.

Iran has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile.Should have been thankful for the bad deal the US made with them!

Noting that Iran's policies in relation to the region and global affairs have not changed, Iran's president stressed that if any group tries to attack the country and harm the Islamic Republic they will receive a "decisive answer".

It's also created to signal to the US that Iran is fighting the Islamic State on its own terms, he added. "The attack stresses coordination between the US and ISIS, and it reveals the evil intentions of the US in administrating terrorism and investing it to pass the US-Zionist project in the region", it said.

The president also put Tehran "on notice" in February after it launched a ballistic missile. Since Trump took office, his administration has put new economic sanctions on those allegedly involved with the program. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.
