Federer Shows Grasscourt Best, Destroys Zverev in Halle Final

Federer Shows Grasscourt Best, Destroys Zverev in Halle Final

Roger Federer brushed aside the challenge of rising star Alexander Zverev to clinch his ninth Gerry Weber Open title in Halle.

Switzerland's Roger Federer, right, with the victor trophy and Germany's Alexander Zverev, left, with the trophy for the second place, frame model Eva Herzigova, after the final match of the Gerry Weber Open tennis tournament in Halle, Germany, Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Defeated in his first comeback match in Stuttgart last week, 35-year-old world No.5 Federer was aggressive from the start, breaking in the first game to take control.

The 20-year-old Zverev also had been 3-0 in title matches this season before Sunday, winning in Montpellier, Munich and Rome, where he beat world No. 2 Novak Djokovic for his first ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title.

The 28-ranked Khachanov fired a backhand long in the breaker to send Federer through to a showdown with Zverev.

The 18-time grand slam champion, who has won the Halle tournament eight-times in his career eliminated Khachanov 6-4 7-6 (7-5) in a match that lasted for one hour and 25 minutes. It was his ninth title at Halle, and the shortest of his 11 finals.

"It was a very good week for me again making the finals here". He also beat Federer in the semi-final of this very tournament just previous year.

He then claimed the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells in March and, two weeks later, the Miami Open. It was quite quick, and usually in doubles the points are a little bit shorter.

It was a thorough dismantling from the Swiss, who oozed confidence as he conceded just four games to the German in winning his favourite Wimbledon warm-up tournament yet again.

Federer won 26 of 28 of his first-serve points, clinching his 16th grass-court title after only 53 minutes with a backhand volley victor.

Alexander Zverev failed to stop Federer's momentum as the Swiss sewed up the match on his first match ball to reap his 92nd career title. I love playing finals, I like big matches, and I've missed it over the (preceding) months.
