China to send disaster relief goods worth United States dollars 2.2 million

China to send disaster relief goods worth United States dollars 2.2 million

Sri Lanka is witnessing its worst flooding since May 2003, when around 250 people were killed and more than 10,000 homes were wrecked in the calamity, according to officials.

An Indian naval ship equipped with medical supplies docked in Colombo Saturday and a second vessel was expected on Monday, Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu said.

Monsoon rains a year ago caused flooding and landslides, killing over 100 people. They also introduced an "SOS" button which led to over a thousand requests and 150 successful boat rescues for those trapped by floods and landslides.

Sri Lankan rescuers pulled out more bodies under enormous mudslides on Sunday as the death toll climbed to 151 with 111 others missing.

"We have a problem of limited resources to cope with the situation", Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake said. Most residents make their living by tending small plots of tea or spices, or by working in nearby gem mines.

However, the meteorological department said it expected more rain on Monday and Tuesday that could hamper relief operations.

India has already sent a shipload of goods, while Pakistan said it would also soon dispatch a consignment of relief supplies.

Aid has continued to pour into Sri Lanka.

The United Nations said it is donating water purification tablets, tents and other supplies for the displaced.

Triggered by the southwest monsoon that typically arrives in late May, heavy rains caused the rivers Kalu, Kelani, Gin, Nilwala, and Attanagalu Oya to spill over their banks in 15 districts, located in the country's southern and western regions.

The early rainy season downpours have forced many families from their homes and affected over 415,618 people across the nation.

President Maithripala Sirisena, who returned from a state visit to Australia, travelled to Kalutara, one of the worst affected districts south of Colombo, to supervise relief operations. Some 471,000 people remain displaced while over 75,000 people are now being housed in over 330 temporary relief accommodation. Several villages in the hilly inland were unreachable, whereas others were yet to get any help.

Sri Lankan flood victims carry an elderly woman as she is evacuated from a flood-hit area in Wehangalla village in Kalutara district, Sri Lanka. "Now we are extremely helpless with our little children".
