Where Trump Is Headed on First Foreign Trip

Where Trump Is Headed on First Foreign Trip

President Donald Trump gives a thumbs up during a National Day of Prayer event at the Rose Garden of the White House on Friday.

Then he'll move on for visits to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and a summit in Italy.

"Tolerance is the cornerstone of peace".

The senior Administration officials cast the trip as a shift in Trump's foreign policy, away from the calculating isolationism Trump called for in his campaign toward a more internationalist view.

Saudi Arabia's powerful Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met Mr Trump in Washington in March in a visit hailed by a senior Saudi advisor as a "historical turning point" in US-Saudi relations. Abbas noted that demand when he joined Trump at the White House.

Speaking on Thursday, Trump said that he would use his trip to strengthen interreligious cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

He became the seventh driver to win a Cup race in 2017 and he did it in his 300th career start in the series. Kevin Harvick is another driver who has had several strong races without a victory to show for it in 2017.

"What the president has demonstrated already", one official said, is that "'America first' is fully compatible with American leadership".

The trip will conclude with a meeting at the G7 summit in Sicily.

The official said that while "conventional wisdom" would tell you that Trump is "weak on alliances", the president is in fact "strong on alliance", provided allies pay their fair share toward defense. "People are very psyched to work with the president", this official said. They will also discuss "way to advance a genuine and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians".

"Whether he can or can't" achieve what others could not, "it's our job to try", one official said.

From there Trump will travel to the Vatican, where he will be received by Pope Francis on May 24.

The announcement follows Trump's meeting on Wednesday with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas (mahk-MOOD' ah-BAHS') and Trump's pledge to mediate peace efforts. Trump, who campaigned on his plans to build a wall on the border with Mexico, shot back saying it was "disgraceful" for a religious leader to question someone's faith.
