Trump meets with Abbas, vows to 'get it done' on peace deal

Trump meets with Abbas, vows to 'get it done' on peace deal

USA officials had said ahead of Wednesday's meeting that Mr Trump would press Mr Abbas to end payments to families of Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails.

President Trump welcomed the leader of the Palestinian Authority to the White House on Wednesday by pledging to accomplish something that many previous USA administrations have tried but never achieved: A lasting peace agreement between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Trump made the comments after welcoming Abbas to the White House for talks aimed at relaunching the moribund peace process.

"I've always heard that perhaps the toughest deal to make is between the Israelis and the Palestinian", Trump said on Wednesday.

"Hopefully something terrific can come out between the Palestinians and Israel", the United States president said at a press conference in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. "There's such hatred", Trump said. In his joint press conference with Netanyahu back in February, Trump, when asked whether he favored a one- or two-state solution, said he is "happy with the one that both parties like", a departure from over a decade of previous USA policy.

And in his White House meeting with Netanyahu on February 15, Trump raised another sensitive issue: Israeli settlements on land in dispute with the Palestinians.

"Without this we will not accept any solution", said Abbas, who touted an Arab League peace plan that offers Israel diplomatic relations with the Muslim world for a Palestinian state.

100 days in, Trump says he's brought about 'profound change'
Trump visited the AMES Companies in Pennsylvania's Cumberland County, a shovel manufacturer since 1774. At the 100-day mark, Trump's approval rating is the lowest of any modern President.

"It is something that I think is frankly, maybe not as hard as people have thought over the years", Trump said, exuding his trademark bravado. "And while there will undoubtedly have to be compromises, you can rest assured: President Donald Trump will never comprise the safety and security of the Jewish state of Israel". But he also says a deal "cannot be imposed by the United States or any other nation".

"How can you talk about peace and fund terrorism?" he said, calling on his Palestinian counterpart to "fund peace, not murder" and cancel payments to families of Palestinians imprisoned in Israeli jails.

Trump "is a results-oriented businessman who feels an intense responsibility to succeed for his investors, in this case the American people", McMaster said Tuesday at Independence Day celebrations hosted by Israel's embassy in Washington, agreeing with those who say Trump is "disruptive".

The event, attended by Trump's new ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, is believed to be the first time the White House celebrated Israel's independence on its grounds.

He did not respond to questions from the press pool about whether he is still considering moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. Trump also urged Netanyahu to "hold back on settlements for a little bit".

Just last week, Trump spoke about his desire for peace in the Middle East, telling Reuters that "there is no reason there's not peace between Israel and the Palestinians - none whatsoever".
