More immigrants arrested, fewer deported under Trump

More immigrants arrested, fewer deported under Trump

Between Jan. 22 and April 29, the immigration enforcement agency arrested 41,318 individuals on civil immigration charges, 75 percent of whom were convicted criminals, after Trump signed immigration-related executive orders in January.

Patel is the eighth detainee to die in ICE custody since October and the second in two days in Georgia.

Homan said the arrest increase came from stepped up enforcement, adding that morale has improved among agents under Trump because they were "allowed to do their job".

The officers were about to embark on a targeted enforcement action, aiming to pick up five men believed to be in violation of USA immigration laws.

Immigration enforcement operations have generated headlines nationwide since Trump signed an executive order on January 25.

The number is a 38% jump from the same period of time in 2016, when 30,028 were taken into custody. Another was at the top of ICE's "Most Wanted Fugitives" list.

Almost 75 percent of the people arrested this year had been convicted of crimes ranging from assault and drug abuse to homicide, ICE said.

ESPN Cleveland host fired for saying Browns rookie on drugs
The failed test resulted from a diluted urine sample, and he was automatically placed in the drug program. I've seen it first-hand from a different vantage point, and it's the same thing all over again.

Immigrant rights advocates challenge the notion that stricter immigration enforcement equals safer communities. This means that every single day, ICE arrested 112 people with no criminal history, 286 people with a previous non-violent criminal conviction, and only 28 people with a previous violent conviction.

One of the biggest fears for undocumented immigrants is that they could be separated from their children. Under Obama, there were tons deportations, we all know that - the contrast is that under Obama, the priorities were that the deportations were of people who had committed those more serious crimes.

Patel was detained May 11 because he did not have the necessary immigration documents when he arrived on a flight from Quito, Ecuador, ICE said.

"The cost of our current immigration detention system in both dollars and lives can not be justified", said Christina Fialho, one of CIVIC's co-founders. It does not include figures from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, for example, which annually detains hundreds of thousands of people entering illegally along the country's borders.

While arrests of immigrants rose, the number of deportations fell 12 percent during the period, Homan said.

While these data clearly reflect the fact that convicted criminals are an immigration enforcement priority, Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly (left, ) has made it clear that ICE will no longer exempt any class of individuals from removal proceedings if they are found to be in the country illegally.
