Levee Fails At Pocahontas Threatening Residents With Floodwaters

Levee Fails At Pocahontas Threatening Residents With Floodwaters

"My admonition to the public, particularly in northeast Arkansas, is to listen to the local authorities, and if they order evacuation, that you do so quickly". Transportation officials hope to open eastbound lanes before Friday morning rush hour. A levee breach near Pocahontas on Wednesday prompted several water rescues.

Rivers in Louisiana are pouring over their banks after parts of the state were inundated with up to 8 inches of rain. Students and the driver were rescued and no one was hurt.

That's the reality in northeast Arkansas where flood waters continue to rise, forcing many roads like Highway 63 to close.

Asa Hutchinson said authorities have evacuated more than 500 people due to flooding after nine levees were breached, including in Pocahontas.

St. Louis County officials say 200 homes along the Meramec have been damaged in the flooding and another 1,500 are potentially in harm's way. Businesses ... homes ... and any structures will flood. At least five deaths have been blamed on flooding in the state. Warnings were also issued urging people to stay out of floodwaters that may be contaminated by raw sewage and chemicals.

River levels are falling after record and near-record flooding in parts of the Midwest, but the crisis is far from over.

As of midmorning Tuesday, the Black River at Pocahontas was just below 28 feet, already above the flood stage of 17 feet and major flood stage of 25 feet. But the mess left behind was substantial. The span was closed Thursday night and is in addition to a 14.5-mile stretch of river closed earlier in the week in St. Louis. Residents aren't breathing easy yet: More rain on Thursday will keep the river high for several days.
