Howell school budget tops $121M for 2017-18

Howell school budget tops $121M for 2017-18

In its regular meeting of the Hot Springs School District last Monday, May 8 - prior to the final day of classes this Thursday, May 18 - board members covered a variety of agenda items, including hearing a number of presentations, and approving next year's 2017-18 calendar and preliminary budget as well as a number of contracts for services.

When school budget is defeated, the school board may decide submit a revised (or, more rarely, unrevised) budget for a second vote, or adopt an austerity budget.

The Cato-Meridian Central School District had five candidates vying for two seats on the school board. Heather Welch received 694 votes; Alan Barone drew 67.

In 2016-17 the budget totaled $117.72 million and was supported by the collection of $76.62 million in local taxes.

Michael Lewis (333 votes) and Dennis Egelston (241) were elected to three-year school board terms.

Proposition No. 4, which would tax each parcel in the Broadalbin-Perth Central School district $1.56 every year to provide a $10,000 annual contribution to Amsterdam Free Public Library, was rejected, 752-188.

"We're not increasing taxes for '17-'18, but we're able to increase our programming significantly in our schools, which is a very proud feat for the Board of Education and administration", Brucato said at the budget adoption meeting. The budget will be $36,620,794, a 2.42 percent increase.

As reported following previous school board meetings, the upcoming school year will face some financial challenges due to some unfavorable audit findings which show a history of the Hot Springs School District outspending their incoming resources.

As many students and families are now thinking of the last days of school, the Lodi School Board is focused on finalizing design plans and budgets for post referendum projects as the weeks get closer to summer break. The new price will be $2.80, which amounts to a $9 per student yearly increase.

The party will have three newcomers as its Town Board candidates: Manny Vilar for supervisor, and Gerry Larsen and Paul Giardina for council members.

The Wainscott School District's $2.95 million budget for the 2017-18 school year was approved with 31 votes in favor and none against. The budget increases the district's tax levy by $192,753, up 1.9 percent to $10.3 million - less than the NY state property tax cap for the district.

Voters also approved establishing a capital reserve fund, with 588 voters supporting the measure and 135 opposed.

A proposition to purchase three school buses passed 403-103.

The following is a breakdown of each district's candidates and budget information.

Bedden will leave the school system on June 30, 2017. Voters also allowed the purchase of transportation vehicles to replace existing vehicles in the transportation program of the district for a sum not to exceed $250,000 in a 184 to 48 vote. Rivanna District representative Jason Buyaki was the only member to vote against it.

The second phase of a long-term plan to renovate and upgrade district schools will turn the attention to elementary schools.
