Excessive caffeine intake causes death of South Carolina teen

Excessive caffeine intake causes death of South Carolina teen

At a press conference on Monday afternoon, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said the teen had consumed multiple caffeinated beverages, including a large diet Mountain Dew, a McDonald's cafe latte and an unidentified energy drink, within the 2 hour span before he became ill.

CBS Local- In South Carolina, a 16-year-old boy collapsed then died in a classroom on April 26.

A caffeine overdose killed a SC teenager last month, the Richland County coroner said Monday. "Parents please talk to your kids about the dangers of these energy drinks", said Davis' father, Sean Cripe. We worry about their safety, their health, especially once they start driving. The coroner said, simply, "it was so much caffeine at the time of his death, that is caused his arrhythmia".

Watts said Cripe was considered a healthy teenager and did not have an undiagnosed heart condition.

An autopsy failed to show any kind of preexisting conditions.

The UK's NHS website does not give a maximum consumption limit, saying: "Caffeine affects some people more than others, and the effect can depend on how much caffeine you normally consume".

Aetna will completely exit Obamacare exchanges in 2018
It was the first major insurance provider to opt out of Obamacare under President Donald Trump. Customers won't know for several more months for sure what their options are for next year.

"You can have five people line up and all of them do the exact same thing with him that day, drink more, and it may not have any type of effect on them at all", Watts said.

"It wasn't a auto crash that took his life".

Sean Cripe said he hopes that if nothing else comes out of this, parents and kids will realize the dangers of caffeinated beverages.

Watts also told children to be careful of what they drink and the amount they consume because events can turn from safe to life-threatening in a matter of a few hours, giving the victim no time to react or seek help.

"The goal here today is not to slam Mountain Dew, not to slam cafe lattes, or energy drinks".

While most of us consider drinking caffeine to be a relatively harmless habit, caffeine is considered a highly addictive drug in science circles. McDonald's does not report the amount of caffeine in its coffee.
