Dixon emerges unhurt from Indy 500 crash

Dixon emerges unhurt from Indy 500 crash

After claiming the pole for the 2017 Indianapolis 500, Scott Dixon ended up not being able to finish the race after getting involved in a crash with Jay Howard.

The crash sent Dixon's auto airborne, and pieces of the vehicle flew off as it flipped and twisted through the air before hitting the top of the wall.

Dixon's vehicle flipped over and bounced around on the ground, but the safety cell managed to stay intact and Dixon was able to get out of the auto under his own power and walk away from the carnage. Howard was not hurt.

"I'm fine. I'm really glad Scott's okay".

"I've seen little parts of it, not the whole replay at least, but yeah definitely a wild ride", Dixon said after leaving the medical centre.

Dixon and Jay Howard collided on lap 55 of the Indy 500 after the latter collided with the wall and then spiralled out of control.

Race officials were quick to red flag the race so that the debris on the track could be cleared, with Fernando Alonso being the incumbent leader. I already had picked that way to go. "That was a little bit of a rough ride".

"I lift and let him go, trying to be the nice guy and he moves right over on me and puts me out in the grey and all the marbles".

"It's tough. I think when we make those decisions of which way to go you're hoping that the auto (Howard) is going to stay against the wall". There was nowhere else to go to avoid him. "You have to believe in the safety we have now".

"I'm glad everybody was ok".

Howard was making only his 13th career IndyCar start and his first since 2011, and that led Dixon team owner Chip Ganassi to question the series' eligibility rules.

ESPN's Dr. Jerry Punch later reported that Dixon returned to the care center and left with a walking boot on his left foot and ankle. "Just a wild ride".
