CBI arrests Mumbai Income Tax Commissioner, 5 others for accepting bribes

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested an income tax (I-T) commissioner (appeals) and five Essar Group officials in an alleged bribery case.

The arrested IT officer is BB Rajendra Prasad, now I-T commissioner (appeals - 30) in Mumbai.

"The CBI laid a trap and caught the Commissioner who had received part of the bribe amount of Rs 19.34 lakh from the real estate trade agent", Gaur said. "The remaining Rs1.5 crore, which was earlier received by the IT officer as a bribe has also been recovered", said the CBI official. Others arrested from Mumbai are chartered accountant Shreyas Parikh, a partner in GK Choksi which handles the affairs of Balaji Trust - in which Essar Investments is a trustee - and Manish Jain of Maa Ambe Jewellers, who allegedly took delivery of the bribe money from Parikh's office.

According to CBI officials, the IT official in Mumbai had recently passed an order in an appeal matter favouring the Balaji Trust, associated with the Essar Group.

Searches conducted in Mumbai and Visakhapatnam in the offices and residences of the accused led to the recovery of several property documents, details of bank accounts, three lockers and several incriminating documents.

Astatement by Balaji Trust denied allegations regarding "any misconduct" by their executives.

Prasad will be produced in CBI court by Wednesday afternoon. It was said that the money would be delivered at Prasad's residence in Vishakapatanam.

On April 27, Mittal then directed Bajpai to deliver the first instalment to the CA, CBI said. "Balaji Trust is a responsible corporate citizen and conducts its business in an open and transparent manner", it said. The four have been sent on a transit remand to Visakhapatnam for further investigations. "Our executives are innocent and the company stands by them", the spokesperson said.
