Workers plug Alaska North Slope oil well that leaked gas

Anchorage-based BP Exploration Alaska Inc., a subsidiary of BP PLC, is the owner of the well in the Prudhoe Bay oil field. A second leak at the well was emitting gas at a reduced rate, the state's Department of Environmental Conservation said in a statement.

Just when it was starting to recover from the Deepwater Horizon fallout, BP has had to report another accident, though much smaller in scale: a well in the North Slope in Alaska has been spewing crude and natural gas for three days. BP eventually agreed to pay $18.7 billion to settle all federal and state claims related to the spill. The plan is to close the well, state officials said. Well pressure is being monitored and excess pressure is being bled off to keep it within a safe range.

BP has reported to regulators that the crude spray has landed on the drilling pad but it remains unsafe to approach the well and determine whether the crude spray has affected tundra in the area. Hilcorp Alaska has discovered several oil and natural-gas leaks in pipelines, but ice made had it impossible to fix the leaks. The infamous Exxon Valdez, which in 1989 spilled tens of millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Alaska, was carrying oil extracted from Prudhoe Bay.

The leak comes as the remote North Slope, once home to the US' biggest oilfields, sees a revival with companies working to boost output from ageing wells and seeking access to new supplies. There have been no injuries and no reports of harm to wildlife. North Slope production was up to 565,000 barrels a day in March, its highest level since December 2013.

The leakage from an oil well in the direction of the cold arid tundra plains in the north, but the volume of leaks so far is still unknown, the U.S. news network ABC News reported. Specialists deployed by Boots and Coots, a well control company, were arriving in the area yesterday to help seal the well.
