Whitehall terror alert suspect named as Khalid Mohamed Omar Ali

Hours later in Harlesden, a suburb in north London, armed police launched an unrelated counter-terrorism operation that resulted in six arrests, five in the area and one in Kent, south-east England.

Police said all four had been "arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of terrorist acts".

Two further arrests were made in Willesden after a man and woman, both aged 28, returned to the raided property.

He remains in custody, having been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act and possession of offensive weapons. One woman was shot and seriously wounded as heavily armed counterterrorism officers stormed a house in a residential London street.

He said "given the horrors in London of a few short weeks ago and our thoughts are still with the victims and survivors of that terrible day".

In the footage, he states he was among a group who said they were held against their will by the captain of the Greek-managed ship Strofades IV when they tried to take aid by sea from Libya to Gaza some months after the Mavi Marmara incident.

Just weeks after the attack on the Houses of Parliament that left five people dead and scores injured, London is once again on high alert as Britain prepares for a snap election on June 8.

Actor Markaiu Mason recalled how he and 27-year-old Ali would often have "heated discussions" about religion and said he had started "preaching more" from the age of 15. Two addresses in London are also being searched in that investigation.

Eyewitnesses described how the woman, who was dressed in Islamic clothing, shouted "don't touch me" as paramedics fought to save her life.

As armed police blocked off Whitehall, a street lined with government buildings that is the main artery of London's government district, witnesses reported seeing and a man on the ground surrounded by police.

"Yesterday was an extraordinary day in London", Deputy Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said Friday, after confirming six arrests overnight. "We are making arrests on a near daily basis", Bas was quoted as saying by News 24.

The attacker, Khalid Masood, drove a vehicle through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge earlier in April before crashing into the gates of parliament.

In Thursday's raids, a 20-year old woman and a 16-year-old boy were arrested at the address where the woman was shot, as was a 20-year-old man nearby.

A Yemeni-born British man who was snatched in a London anti-terror raid was previously suspected of joining Isis, but was released without charge.

Britain's official threat from worldwide terrorism stands at the second-highest level, "severe", meaning an attack is highly likely.

The former head of Britain's national counter-terrorism security office Chris Phillips said: "This is the way we prevent terrorism", adding that the raid had to be conducted with speed and have "shock value".

She was shot on Thursday evening as armed officers entered a house in Willesden, the city's northwest.
