UK's Johnson cancels Moscow visit after Syria gas attack

Rather, the launching of 59 cruise missiles on Shayrat Air Base - believed to be the origin of Syria's lethal attack against its own citizens - was "related exclusively to the most recent horrific use of chemical weapons against women, children, and as the President said, even small babies", Tillerson told ABC's "This Week" in an interview airing Sunday.

"It's important that we keep our priorities straight".

"First and foremost, we must defeat ISIS", the normally press-shy secretary stated.

Still, Tillerson made clear that the 6-year-long effort to end the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad hinges on defeating the Islamic State terror group, which has strongholds in Syria and Iraq. "I think it's based on assumptions that quite frankly are not the right ones".

The CBS host pressed Tillerson on saying there's been no change in policy regarding Assad, wondering if he was stating that the Syrian president's fate should be determined by the Syrian people.

The U.S. military rained dozens of Tomahawk missiles down on an airfield in western Syria late Thursday, a response to the Middle East nation's chemical attack on Tuesday that killed 87 people.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has cancelled a visit to Moscow next week as tensions grow over events in Syria. "We now need a long-term solution to this conflict".

The nature of the substance used has not been confirmed, and Syria has insisted it would not and has not used chemical weapons.

Russian Federation has consistently denied that Syrian forces used chemical weapons, insisting the incident at Khan Sheikhoun was caused by a hit on a rebel chemical weapons plant, a claim dismissed by the West.

But coupled with a thin profile (only 6.97mm) and rounded edges, the device is quite elegant, if not exactly inspiring. For a start, the Honor 8 Pro has a bigger 5.7-inch screen , up from 5.2 inches on the Honor 8.

But there have been repeated allegations of chemical weapons use by the government since then.

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani has said "terrorists are celebrating" the USA strikes on the air base.

But Russia and Syria's other key ally, Iran, on Saturday vowed to continue fighting in the country after army chiefs General Valery Gerasimov and Major General Mohammad Bagheri spoke by phone.

Washington says it acted because Syrian aircraft bombed Khan Sheikhoun with sarin, a banned nerve agent that Damascus pledged to give up in 2013 after Trump's predecessor Barack Obama threatened to bomb as punishment for another alleged gas attack.

The two men "condemned the American operation against a Syrian airbase which is an aggression against an independent country", Iran's state news agency IRNA said.

Moscow has further promised to strengthen Syria's anti-aircraft defences and it is shutting down a hotline with the United States created to avoid collisions between their air forces over the country.

Earlier in the day, Johnson announced in a statement published on the United Kingdom government official website that he had canceled his visit to Moscow, scheduled for April 10, due to the recent developments in Syria.

The general consensus among both parties is that working with the worldwide community in a diplomatic fashion is probably the best strategy in dealing with Assad, but if Trump doesn't go before Congress to explain his future plans and chooses to launch another strike at Syria, could this unleash a serious war?

"The Russians were never targeted in this particular strike", Tillerson said.
