Twitter has plans for 24/7 live streaming

Twitter has plans for 24/7 live streaming

"Our goal is to be a dependable place so that when you want to see what's happening, you think of going to Twitter", said Noto. Amazon reportedly paid $50 million for this year's season streaming rights, while Twitter paid $10 million for last year's, according to The Verge.

Earlier this month, Twitter lost a bidding war to Amazon for the streaming rights of Thursday Night NFL games. For instance, the National Football League package got about 3.5 million unique viewers to the platform, Oscars pre and post shows garnered 6.4 million viewers in total, and the live inauguration day coverage from PBS brought 8.6 million unique viewers, notes CNBC.

Twitter already plays host to a number of live shows, including programming from Bloomberg, BuzzFeed itself (election coverage, for example) and live sports. In an effort to change this, Twitter has confirmed that it will begin streaming live video around the clock. Dropping another hint, Noto says that the end result could be programming like viewers get on the 24/7 news networks and sports channels. And much like Facebook, it is gunning for a video-first strategy but with a twist of its own - something we've come to expect from the micr0-blogging platform.

Noto did not state when Twitter would commence broadcasting around the clock, specifying that it would take some time for the company to ramp up to that point, but he said that they were now working on a array of programs to fill up this new always-on Twitter TV.

First OSCE staff member killed in rebel east Ukraine
The OSCE team's 600 members in eastern Ukraine are the only independent monitoring mission in the devastated industrial war zone. A representative of the mission said its staff had previously come under fire at least seven times since the start of this year.

Nonetheless, Twitter's still pursuing live video.

Most of the content is going to be live, but Twitter needs to have a decent lineup of entertainment-related shows to woo advertisers for its network.

We think that is a great way to have the programming carried along with you during your day. He further added, "I did that myself during the debates".

That kind of video falls into a category Jeremy Liew of Lightspeed Venture Partners calls "ambient digital video", which he believes exploits a gap left by digital video services like Netflix and HBO Now that are always looking for your full attention.
