Turkey Minister Rejects EU Call for Probe into Vote

Turkey Minister Rejects EU Call for Probe into Vote

Sanders said that the president was not supporting or accepting the results of the referendum, congratulating Erdogan more as a formality, and that the phone call did not signal an endorsement or acceptance of the voting results.

Protests have erupted across Turkey over the past three days against allegations of cheating in votes in a referendum that delivered the ruling party a victory and ushers in the controversial presidential system.

Alev Korun, an Austrian member of the council's observer mission, said the number of uncertified ballots would nearly double the margin of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's victory - an electoral win that vastly broadens the power of the presidency.

Turkish police arrested 38 people in a series of dawn raids across Istanbul this morning, as the government cracks down on groups protesting about the result of Sunday's referendum.

A spokesman for European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said claims from neutral observers of election irregularities had been "examined attentively" in Brussels. Separately, the Department of State also urged voters and parties to focus on collaboration and dialogue in the aftermath of the referendum, while protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens regardless of their vote.

According to unofficial results, the Yes campaign won with 51.41 percent, while the No votes stood at 48.59 percent.

Turkey's bar association said that the last-minute decision taken by YSK to allow unstamped ballots in the referendum was clearly against the law, prevented proper records being kept, and may have impacted the results.

Prime Minister and AKP leader Binali Yildirim said Erdogan can rejoin the party he founded in 2001 once official results of the plebiscite, granting him sweeping powers, are announced.

On Tuesday an Austrian member of the Council of Europe observer mission said up to 2.5 million votes could have been manipulated in the Turkish referendum that ended in a close "yes" vote for greater presidential powers.

"There is only one decision to ease the situation in the context of the law-the Supreme Election Board (YSK) should annul the vote", the Dogan News Agency quoted CHP deputy leader Bulent Tezcan as saying.

More than 320 of Turkey's 500 largest industrial companies are based in cities that voted against the constitutional changes, 181 of them in Istanbul. He accused the OSCE of arriving with preconceived opinions. "From the German government's point of view, Turkey must. clear up the questions that have been raised".

The pro-Kurdish opposition HDP filed an appeal on Wednesday for an annulment on the grounds there had been widespread violations, a day after a similar move by the main opposition CHP.

Electoral board head Sadi Guven said the objections would be evaluated Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, the commission's spokesman added: "As far as the future is concerned, as President Juncker has said in the past, we encourage Turkey to move closer to the European Union again and not to move even further and faster away from us".
