Taser Rebrands As Axon, Offers Police Body Cameras

Taser Rebrands As Axon, Offers Police Body Cameras

"We believe these cameras are more than just tools to protect communities and the officers who serve them", Rick Smith, the company's chief executive and founder, said in a statement.

The Axon name comes from Taser's unit that sells police body cameras, patrol auto cameras and the software for managing the hours of digital footage they generate. And the prospect of having more police departments sign on after their yearlong trial probably isn't a bad look either.

Axon, formerly TASER International, announced Tuesday it's offering cameras, tech support and storage to the hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officers free of cost for one year.

"For every dollar that we spend to put this out in the hand of customers, we see several dollars in long-term opportunity when they get to the end of the year" of free service, he said.

Functionally, the introduction of body cameras into policing is aimed at cutting the time it takes officers to write police reports.

Most of this came from Taser devices and cartridges, which accounted for $202 million in sales a year ago, compared to the $65 million from Axon-related cameras and Evidence.com, which allows for storage of footage and other data. The name will represent the network of devices, apps and people the company works on.

Axon will be providing every office in the United State access to their technology.

The name change comes as the long-time maker of electrically charged stun guns, used to temporarily incapacitate a person, as well as other law enforcement and self-defense products, tries to transition into a multi-purpose company with a huge software component. TASER will remain one of our flagship products, but now as a single focused product brand for our suite of Smart Weapons.

Management will host a conference call tonight, April 5, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. (ET) to provide further information to investors.

But a bulk of Taser's revenue still comes from its traditional taser gun and camera business.

Axon now employs around 110 people in Seattle, with plans to hire an additional 80 in the next year.
