Significant Severe Weather Threat Monday

The storm system making its way across Louisiana has resulted in two deaths and two tornadoes. The storm was rated as a high-end EF-0 storm on the Enhanced Fujita scale, with estimated winds in excess of 75 miles per hour.

Sizeable hail has been reported in Chesapeake around 6:20 p.m. The parishes and counties shaded in green are now under a Flash Flood Watch from the National Weather Service from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning.

The area of the tornado watch stretches from Danville to Virginia Beach, as far south as Elizabeth City and as far north as Petersburg. At this point, the greatest risk for severe weather on Sunday will be east of the area.

Showers and thunderstorms are still likely before 10 p.m. There's a slight risk of severe thunderstorms for parts of central and southwest Texas.

On Sunday, we will be in store for a 90% chance of heavy rain and possible severe weather, too.

Texas and Oklahoma had experienced severe weather the previous night, which Goudsward said might have dampened the storms' potential by the time they reached Arkansas.

The Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) has activated its Crisis Action Team due to the unsafe weather conditions across Louisiana that will likely continue Sunday evening. The weekend looks nice with dry conditions until Sunday night.

The NWS also urges those who are in areas subject to flooding to get to higher ground during a flood and do not walk through flood waters. This storm is capable of damaging wind gusts and quarter-sized hail.

Rainfall amounts for Thursday are 80 percent chance with up to one inch possible in some areas.

In the event of a tornado or otherwise strong weather, Edwards advised residents to seek an interior room - preferably a bathroom - and hunker down.

The threat for severe weather statewide is forecast to diminish by 4 a.m. Thursday.
