Palestinians strike in support of prisoners' protest

While the strike has drawn most of its participants from imprisoned members of Barghouti's Fatah movement, smaller groups of prisoners from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine have also joined, with each organization pledging its support for the strikers and their goals.

The Israeli forces fired teargas at protesters in the city of al-Khalil as well as in the town of al-Eizariya in occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

Prisoners from all Palestinian political factions are participating in the mass open-ended hunger strike led by Barghouti.

"Many of us have been in Israeli prisons and nearly all of us have family members there", Mahzouz Shlalda, a middle school teacher from Sair, a village near Hebron, said in a telephone interview.

In a letter sent from prison, Barghouti - a member of the Fatah movement's Central Committee and leader of the hunger strike - stressed the need to show support for the hunger strikers and ensure respect for global law.

The prisoners have issued demands ranging from better medical care to phone access.

"We are firmly committed to see each battle of confrontation with the Prison Service and its instruments of repression and intelligence agencies as a collective battle", the PFLP's prison branch said on April 16.

Israel charges the PA 40 million shekels (Dh40.3m) a month for the electricity, deducting the sum from the transfers of Palestinian tax revenues that Israel collects on behalf of the authority. The last large-scale hunger strike was in February 2013, when 3,000 Palestinians refused to eat for one day to protest against the death of a fellow detainee.

In the February 2015 trial of nonviolent organizer Abdullah Abu Rahme, for instance, Israeli military prosecutors sought a long prison sentence in order to deter what she called "ideological crimes" of political protest.

On Thursday, nearly all businesses and schools remained closed, and public transport stayed off the streets in all cities across the occupied West Bank. Israeli settlers living in the same territory, however, have the right to protest.

He called for the ICRC to demand Israel "ensure treating Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike according to norms and standards set in global humanitarian law".

The announcement by the Palestinian Authority means that in order to continue receiving power from Israel or purchasing fuel for the power station, worldwide or private agencies will have to cover the costs. Transferring prisoners outside of an occupied territory is a violation of global law.
