Isis tells Raqqa residents to evacuate over fears nearby dam will collapse

Isis tells Raqqa residents to evacuate over fears nearby dam will collapse

Sunday fighting between SDF units and Daesh militants inflicted damage to the Tabqa Dam located on the Euphrates river and aimed at holding back the water on the Lake Assad which is the state's biggest reservoir.

The US, which has provided substantial air and ground support to the alliance, ferried hundreds of SDF forces, as well as US military advisers and US artillery, behind ISIL lines earlier this week.

He added that south of the dam, the SDF-affiliated Syrian Arab Coalition (SAC) established a beachhead.

US -backed Syrian fighters reached a major dam held by the Islamic State group in northern Syria Friday as Syria's United Nations ambassador said hundreds of American personnel are "invading my country", insisting that any effort to liberate the city of Raqqa - the de facto capital of the Islamic State group - should be done in coordination with the Damascus government.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group also reported the SDF advance.

Fears that a nearby dam might collapse are reportedly causing panic and confusion in the Syrian city of Raqqa, a stronghold of the so-called Islamic State (IS) group. Fighting is ongoing inside the airport and its surroundings and full control of the airport is expected within the next few hours, ' Talal Sello told AFP.

Meanwhile the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, supported by the U.S., are said to be closing in on Raqqa as well as the Tabqa dam.

US-backed Kurdish and Arab forces are squeezing ISIS from the north, while Syrian government troops - backed up by Russian Federation - have been pushing from the west.

Cases of feral children - children living in the wild with no human contact - though not unheard of, are few and far between. It wasn't until backup had come that they were able to coax the girl towards the authorities and to a nearby hospital.

Another spokesman said the liberation of Raqqa could still take "several months".

US-led coalition forces said the dam was structurally sound. The extremist group has controlled Raqqa since 2014, and it's considered to be IS militants' de-facto capital.

IS ordered residents to evacuate the Syrian city of Raqqa on Sunday following reports on its propaganda agency Amaq that the dam "is threatened with collapse at any moment because of American strikes and a large rise in water levels".

But it warned that damage to the dam "could lead to massive scale flooding across Raqa and as far away as Deir Ezzor" province to the southeast.

With the US-led coalition's support, the SDF launched an offensive known as Operation Euphrates Rage to encircle and retake Raqqa in northern Syria from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist group in November past year.

The latest round of UN-backed Syria peace talks entered a second day in Geneva on Friday but there was little hope of a breakthrough in negotiations that have yielded little in previous rounds.

The SNC says it believes coalition forces were behind an airstrike that killed at least 30 civilians sheltering in a school in the countryside outside Raqqa on March 21.

Russia's air support has helped Syrian government forces regain the upper hand in swathes of territory across the country.
