Google Wants To Give You This Sweet-Ass $17000 VR Camera

Google Wants To Give You This Sweet-Ass $17000 VR Camera

The camera consists of 17 in-built cameras that use Google's Jump software. The product's hefty price tag may scare away some creators, but Google wants to get its latest toy in the hands of its creative community.

Google is keen to encourage filmmakers to make more of VR films and for that to happen, it is also open to lend out free VR cameras.

The 17-camera monster rig is expected to go on sale in the coming summer season.

The second-gen Jump camera - preceded only by the GoPro Odyssey - comes packed with 17 Yi Halo 4K-capable cameras.

Daydream isn't Google's only VR platform, actually seeing daylight over a year after Jump, which however remains the lesser known, more nichey and professional-focused project of the two.

The YiHalo will sell for $17,000 this summer and is closely integrated with Google's Jump System, a cloud-based stitching solution meant to remove manual intervention from stereoscopic 360-degree video production.

The Xiaomi-backed Yi is announcing new cameras at the NAB conference in Las Vegas.

YI Technology today unveiled YI HALO, a next-generation virtual-reality camera built with Google's Jump technology. After processing the video information from all the cameras together, you get an 8K video at 30 fps.

With its built in Wi-Fi, you can securely and remotely control your YI Halo with your smartphone app. It weighs less than seven and a half pounds, including the battery, and is easy to mount and easily portable. (IMAX is also working on a Jump-compatible camera setup, and Facebook has its own $25,000 and up solution in the Surround 360 rig.) The company is using modified versions of its 4K action camera to make up the Halo. The YI HALO VR Camera is the tech giant's newest camera rig that may help usher the mobile consumers into the age of VR. Users should expect about an hour of battery life. The filmmakers will be given access to the Halo and Jump Assembler software in order to create 360-degree movies. By applying to the program, filmmakers have the chance to gain free access to a Yi Halo and the Jump Assembler.

The Yi Halo will cost $16,999 and will hit the United States first before Yi's home country of China.
