GIRAFFE WATCH: 'All observations, behavior, and predictions suggest a calf today, tonight'

The zoo added: "This is what we have all been waiting for!"

A pregnant giraffe has its own website, a GoFundMe page, an apparel line and millions of people worldwide watching live-streaming video waiting for it to give birth.

April's udder changes have been significant in recent days, and keepers say udder development "occurs, generally, just prior to birthing". We have watched April pace around. Maybe it actually worked.

Keepers said that they were hoping a text alert system would be available for tracking April's progress by Friday. The zookeepers and veterinarian will step back and let the mom take it from there.

Upon naturally weaning, the calf will move on to another facility to start a breeding program there.

"We can not retain offspring, as it would lead to incestuous mating and undermine the genetics of the program and species", the zoo says.

This is April's fourth calf and the first for Oliver, the giraffe who fathered the baby. Bulls take no part in rearing young. He is a bull - and a bull is a bull is a bull, officials said. Thousands upon thousands of commenters voiced their frustration on Facebook and YouTube, and the stream was restored within an hour or so.

Giraffe mothers carry their young for about 15 months, and while April's caregivers observed breeding behavior between April and her mate, Oliver, in the middle of October 2015, it is hard to tell for sure if conception occurred, AAP owner Jordan Patch told Live Science in February.

"While I could understand that it would be a really neat elaborate hoax, it is not that".

April has been with Animal Adventure Park since September 2015 and this is her first calf birth at the park.

Giraffes can be in labor anywhere from two to six hours. At birth it will weigh in at about 150 pounds and will stand at about 6' tall, Animal Adventure Park said.

Once in the final stages of the labor, the process is quick: Visible hooves-to-calf on the ground can be as short as 30 minutes, the park said.
