Ford unveils 1st gasoline-electric hybrid

Ford unveils 1st gasoline-electric hybrid

Automakers deal with predicament in China's substantial however congested market: Regulators are pushing them to offer electric vehicles, but purchasers desire gas-guzzling SUVs.

The VW model will be the first in a range of electric vehicles in China, said Jochem Heizmann, head of VW's China unit.

Models on display at Auto Shanghai 2017, the global industry's biggest marketing event of the year, reflect the conflict between Beijing's ambitions to promote environmentally friendly propulsion and Chinese consumers' love of hulking, fuel-hungry SUVs.

Analysts say going forward the maturing of the market will benefit larger manufacturers with the scale and product range to pivot along with consumer tastes, and that a shakeout of less-able players is likely in coming years.

For most manufacturers, they were flanked by as many as a dozen hulking SUVs that can carry up to seven passengers. But with the Chinese SUV market steadily on the rise, prospects look promising for the Korean SUV maker to take its flagship Tivoli, the No. 1 subcompact SUV in Korea, into the Chinese market.

GM said its Velite 5 hybrid will be sold not as a Chevrolet but by its Buick unit, which has modest sales elsewhere but is GM's main brand in China.

The GM-SAICjoint venture will make the Velite 5 hybrid in China, whose prices will start at $38,600.

With the economy slowing and air pollution is at the top of the political agenda, the buzz these days in China is less in the luxury market - although there will be plenty of expensive motors on display in Shanghai - and more focused on new-energy vehicles.

A year ago 11m cars were recalled in China, just over 120,000 of which were domestic brands, but this apparent discrepancy is not deterring foreign brands from targeting what remains a growing market. Buick also sells a hybrid LaCrosse in China.

Through a Chinese joint venture company, SDS, GKN will start making an electric transmission for a domestic Chinese automaker in 2018 and then deliver an electric motor, inverter, axle and gearbox for a European firm's small auto platform a year later. Other vehicles that will add up to the intensity during the unveiling are the Lexus NX facelift, Citroën C-Aircross, Citroën C5 Aircross, VLF Force 1 V10 Roadster, and others as they will also add to the auto lineup for the show.

SAIC, controlled by Shanghai's municipal government, has toiled for years in the shadow of its foreign partners, Volkswagen AG and General Motors Co, who are obliged by Beijing to form joint ventures with a local automaker for their China operations.

The all-new model will be based on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) for smaller cars, and will be available for sale in 2019 and exported globally from China, Volvo said.

Production is slated to begin in three years. Kia, whose compact sedan K3 was listed as the 12th best-selling vehicle in China in February, also intends to introduce two new models designed for Chinese drivers. The Cabinet's planning agency announced a goal in February of having 100,000 public charging stations and 800,000 private stations operating by the end of this year.

Electric cars are exempt from sales tax and quotas on license plates ssued in Beijing, Shanghai and other cities to curb congestion and smog. Customers are steering the other path: First-quarter SUV sales skyrocketed 21 percent from a year previously to 2.4 million, while electric vehicle purchases sank 4.4 percent to simply 55,929. But behind the scenes, many are anxious that batteries capable of delivering the same driving range as gasoline cars are still too expensive.
