European Union leaders adopt Brexit guidelines at Brussels summit

European Union leaders adopt Brexit guidelines at Brussels summit

A comparison between the draft EU negotiating guidelines and the final framework adopted at the European Council summit show only a small number of amendments.

Loekke Rasmussen said after Saturday's European Union summit in Brussels that a formal decision would be made in the fall on where the agencies will be located. Tusk said however that "before discussing the future, we have sort out our past and we handle it with genuine care - but firmly".

The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has claimed Britain "underestimates" the complexity of Brexit talks.

European Council President Donald Tusk arrives for an EU summit at the Europa building in Brussels on Saturday, April 29, 2017.

The two share the island, and the difficulties of re-establishing a land border once Britain leaves are vast and politically fraught.

French President Francois Hollande said the leaders agreed on "a simple principle", applicable to Britain or any other country that might want to quit the bloc in the future, "that they must not be in a more favorable situation on the outside than they were on the inside".

The money aims to pay for everything from pensions to financial commitments already made in the EU's 7-year-budget, which runs until 2020.

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said: "They are maybe not any more in our family but they are still our neighbours so we should have respect for each other".

And he said Britain should harbor no illusion of getting out cheaply.

He added: "If you are no longer part of a club, it has consequences. A Brexit for free is not possible".

Schaeuble said Germany would not pay any more. "This must be the No. 1 priority", Tusk said.

Brexit talks are expected to begin after the General Election on 8 June.

Blocked again: Federal judge halts Trump's order on sanctuary cities
District Judge Theodore Chuang in Maryland said comments by Trump supported the allegation that the ban was aimed at Muslims. White House chief of staff Reince Priebus described the ruling as another example of the "9th Circuit going bananas".

The EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier told the leaders he hopes to see sufficient progress on these issues to start talks on Britain's future relationship with the EU as early as October this year.

European Union leaders have endorsed a stiff set of divorce terms for Britain at a summit in Brussels, rejoicing in a rare show of unity in adversity.

Abe made the statements Saturday in London after a meeting with Prime Minister Theresa May. "May has been saying that people are lining up against Britain".

European Union leaders have unanimously agreed on the guidelines that the bloc will follow when negotiating with the United Kingdom over its exit from the union. "We must spend money more efficiently than we now do". It will be their first meeting since British Prime Minister Theresa May triggered the official withdrawal process a month ago.

May called an election ostensibly to strengthen her political mandate before negotiations begin in earnest.

Mr Juncker added: "I have the impression sometimes that our British friends... underestimate the technical difficulties we have to face".

The guidelines say that talks on future relations - particularly an EU-UK trade deal - should only start once there has been "sufficient progress" on the divorce questions.

"We want to be partners, but we also want to defend our interests", Merkel said in an interview with German broadcaster NDR on Thursday.

Rutte says it "is in the Dutch interest to have good agreements on the divorce proceedings but also about future relations".

"What is needed is unity to get a deal done within the two-year timeframe".

Meeting for the first time since British Prime Minister Theresa May formally triggered a two-year countdown to Brexit in late March, the 27 other European Union leaders will lose little time over a lunch in Brussels in approving an 8-page set of negotiating guidelines hammered out by their diplomats over the past month.

"The Commission has prepared a full list of rights and benefits that we want to guarantee for those affected by Brexit".
