Efforts To Revive GOP Healthcare Bill Underway

After a bumpy meeting with Vice President Pence, it became clear House Republicans were not on the same page.

Rep. Chris Collins, R-New York, a House Energy and Commerce Committee member who met with officials at the White House Monday, said some members do not want to give states the ability to waive the provision.

Lawmakers said they plan to meet again on Wednesday to continue the search for an agreement, but there are doubts from many corners about whether a deal is possible anytime soon.

Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said he'd still like revised legislation to come up for a vote before the House goes into a two-week recess.

Conservative House Republicans are entertaining a White House offer to revise the party's failed health care bill.

A source familiar with internal House Republican deliberations said healthcare, not taxes, now topped the House agenda and that the White House was driving the healthcare effort.

"There is still an opportunity for compromise on this, but I think it still needs more time,"he said".

Ryan's office, however, seemed to be keeping arms-length from the negotiations.

Asked why Pence, rather than Ryan, appeared to be the "pivot point" of the health talks, Ryan replied, "There is no one pivot point".

"Now we're throwing around concepts to improve the bill", he said. "That's occurring right now". "See, right now, because of the time crunch, I think we're using the GOP plan as the backdrop and trying to modify that".

"The administration is saying it would like it this week", Republican Rep. Chris Collins of NY said Tuesday morning.

Significant Severe Weather Threat Monday
The storm was rated as a high-end EF-0 storm on the Enhanced Fujita scale, with estimated winds in excess of 75 miles per hour . On Sunday , we will be in store for a 90% chance of heavy rain and possible severe weather, too.

Also at the evening meeting with conservatives were White House chief of staff Reince Priebus and budget director Mick Mulvaney. But several key players on the Hill and at the White House said talks have progressed.

Late on Tuesday, following a closed-door meeting with House Republicans, Pence told reporters there was "good talk, good progress" toward a bill. "But would certainly need a whole lot more information before we can take any action either in support or in opposition". "The White House hasn't nailed it down", Ryan told an audience in Washington.

Another participant - Freedom Caucus chairman Rep. The current version of the GOP legislation erases that coverage requirement, but would let states reimpose them on their own. Conservatives have argued that such restrictions inflate consumer costs, but supporters say it makes coverage accessible for those with costly medical conditions. While in the past Republican moderates have often felt compelled to kowtow to the wishes of the party's more extreme wing (particularly when the party has held large majorities in both houses), a big reason why the first attempt at Trumpcare failed was that moderates vowed to oppose it on the grounds that its draconian health care cuts would harm their constituents. It would erase its tax fines for consumers who don't buy policies, federal aid to help many afford coverage and Medicaid expansion for additional poor people.

"The president and I remain confident that working with the Congress we will repeal and replace Obamacare with health care reform that will work for the American people and work for the American economy", he said.

Reaction from rank-and-file GOP lawmakers to the White House's revisions was mixed.

Conservative Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said he remained a "no" votes, saying states should be allowed to opt out of Obama's insurance requirements without seeking federal permission "on bended knee".

"If leadership hasn't learned the lessons of the failures of two weeks ago, then they'll bring something forward where nobody knows about it and try and get it passed", Renacci said. Freedom Caucus members want these regulations repealed to ensure what they consider a freer market for insurance, while moderates believe a repeal would undermine protections for people with preexisting conditions and leave sick Americans without affordable coverage. Meadows said talks were boiling down to curbing several of Obama's coverage requirements - a sharp contrast to the full repeal of the statute that many initially demanded. He added, "We must fight them" in 2018, a reference to their re-election campaigns.

Republican lawmakers have said the new push on healthcare would maintain Obamacare's essential health benefits clause listing services and care that insurers must cover.

He also played a round of golf Sunday with Sen.

"If conservatives want 100 percent repeal, let's say moderates want 80 percent repeal", he said.
