Chinese shares post rising streak over new economic zone plan

Chinese shares post rising streak over new economic zone plan

The central government is applying what experts called a timely brake on unreasonable real estate development in the Xiongan New Area, as Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli urged strict controls in the newly announced innovation hub neighboring Beijing.

Xiongan is part of a planned megaregion called Jing-Jin-Ji comprising Beijing, Tianjin, and the Hebei Province.

As of Thursday, all 10 counties in Xiongan New Area and neighboring regions had launched new home purchase policies to stop speculative buying.

Cities typically sprawl out over time, but the Chinese government just announced they will be building a whole new city about 62 miles away from Beijing.

The state news agency Xinhua reported that the plans are meant to advance the development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and will be expanded to cover an area of 2,000 km in the long term - almost three times the area covered by New York City.

The executives noted that 80% of smartphone data today is consumed on Wi-Fi, even though customers have to initiate connectivity. At 59, it's one of the lowest in the ISPs group, and at 62, it's below average for "subscription television services".

Speaking to Xinhua after the country announced it would set up the new area on Saturday, He called for pooling talent from China and other countries and drawing on global experience to build the area. The new district would initially cover an area of about 100 square kilometres, and authorities want to turn the region into a new growth centre as China's economy slows, according to the news agency.

The new area will create a favorable environment for innovation and attract innovative talent and teams to help build it into a "high ground" for innovation and a new science and technology city, the official said.

The decisions to build Xiongan and a "subsidiary city center" for Beijing are strategic moves in advancing the coordinated development of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Zhang said, quoting President Xi Jinping. Industries that don't meet the requirements of the function of the capital will be moved to the Xiong'an New Area.

"We'll also give support to major transportation, ecology, water conservation, energy and public service projects in the new area", he said.
