April the Giraffe Finally Gives Birth as More Than One Million Watch

For over two months now, so many of us have been focusing a frankly ridiculous amount of attention on a pregnant giraffe living in a NY zoo. The calf was walking and nursing not long after its birth.

In a long-anticipated event that caused almost two million people to suddenly think, "Oh, so that's what a giraffe's vagina looks like", all at once, New York-based zoo animal and internet celebrity April The Giraffe has finally given birth.

April's pregnancy was catapulted into global headlines in late February after YouTube briefly yanked the zoo's live stream following complaints by animal activists that it violated the site's policies concerning "nudity and sexual content".

After a 16-month gestation period, the wait finally ended with the male calf's debut in a livestream from the zoo.

Once the calf is born, the Harpursville zoo in upstate NY will have a contest to name it.

April has her own website and even an apparel line.

Adventure park owner Jordan Patch says mother and calf are both doing fine.

April's celebrity and the public fascination with her unborn calf blossomed when the zoo began providing a live YouTube stream in February. The proud papa is a 5-year-old giraffe named Oliver. They will now hold a contest to name the giraffe.

A zoo spokesperson says the delivery could take all day Saturday.

Animal Adventure park is now closed to the public and will open in mid-May.

The YouTube page on Saturday showed April going into labor and the hooves of the baby first emerging from the standing mother. The 6-foot-tall (1.83-meter) calf is estimated to weigh as much as 150 pounds (68 kg). Following the announcement that the giraffe was finally giving birth, the YouTube live feed had nearly a million current viewers.

Once the calf is born, the Harpursville zoo in upstate NY will have a contest to name it.
