Apple iPhone 8: OLED display, possible launch delay and other rumours

According to his most recent research note, a copy of which was obtained on Wednesday by AppleInsider, Cowan and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri detailed how Apple has apparently "reached a bottleneck", and is now generating much lower than expected yield rates for the iPhone 8 and its glass-embedded Touch ID sensor, citing his own supply chain work.

A report said a few weeks ago that Samsung had similar plans for the Galaxy S8, but Synaptics wasn't able to deliver its in-screen fingerprint scanning technology in time.

Said longtime Apple analyst Brian White as posted on MacRumors, "Our contact strongly believes the 5.8-inch iPhone 8 will be delayed by several weeks due to challenges around the 3D sensing technology, but still in time for the December holidays". While the firm is still expected to unveil the latest handset - iPhone 8 or iPhone Edition - at an event in September, the devices will only be available for pre-order initially. Arcuri's memo says that Apple may resort to moving the Touch ID sensor to the rear of the device - an approach that Samsung has taken with its new smartphones - or ditching Touch ID entirely in favor of facial recognition, or even delaying the device's production if it can't refine its current system, whose "current yield rate... remains low" while Apple "seems unwilling to use other vendors' products". Apple could move Touch ID to the back, but feels that this would not be "user friendly". However, it has been claimed that the OLED panels could be included only in premium iPhone 8 models and that other models like the rumoured 4.7-inch or 5-inch iPhone 7s and 5.5-inch iPhone 7s Plus may not feature them. Well, these are all rumours, until we get to see the final launch of the most awaited iPhone 8.
