Ted Cruz could have a fight on his hands in 2018

Democrat Beto O'Rourke is set to announce a bid against Sen.

O'Rourke's fledgling campaign scheduled "a big announcement" on Friday in El Paso, his hometown. "The re-election rate in the last 50 years is 93%".

"He's been running for president for four years while he should have been serving the people in Texas", said the 44-year-old third-term congressman, who would enter next year's contest against Cruz as a considerable underdog in Republican-leaning Texas.

The El Paso native went on a cross-country, bi-partisan 1,600-mile road trip with fellow Texas Congressman, Republican Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas).

Cruz's campaign has yet to comment.

The former businessman's decision to run for Senate is an idea that he has reportedly toyed with for some time now.

With Democrats facing a tough Senate, the Texas Senate race would likely not receive national resources.

UTEP's Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Jose Villalobos says O'Rourke's biggest obstacle is being a Democrat in a red state.

"It's no secret that Joaquin is heavily weighing a Senate run, and he will continue to have those discussions with his family, friends and supporters across Texas", Castro's political director, Matthew Jones, said in a statement Wednesday. Castro has a higher public profile than O'Rourke and is a more familiar face on cable news. In the 2014 primaries, about 28,000 voters turned out in El Paso County, while nearly 42,000 cast ballots in Castro's home turf of Bexar County.

"I've known that he's been interested in running". He has toured the state in recent weeks, talking about his prospective Senate campaign in terms that made it sound like he has already reached a decision. Joaquin Castro of San Antonio is considering a bid. Castro, who has been rising in the ranks of Democrat reps, is expected to announce his intentions in April, the Houston Chronicle stated.

O'Rourke said he speaks to Castro daily.
