Starbucks Canada vows to hire at least 1000 refugees

Starbucks Canada vows to hire at least 1000 refugees

Johnson, Schultz's successor, said he was comforted by the fact that Schultz will stay on as executive chairman of the coffeehouse when Johnson becomes CEO on April 3.

The announcement comes as Starbucks is heavily focused on growing its business overseas.

"Starbucks has succeeded because of our people".

The coffee giant is ramping up efforts at time when the unemployment rate is on the decline (it fell to 4.7% at the end of February) by opening up 3,400 stores in the U.S.by 2021.

Johnson and Schultz sat down with CNN's Poppy Harlow this week to discuss the United States political climate and its impact on worldwide business. Starbucks also is trying to lure more diners with a gluten-free breakfast sandwich and vegan bagel.

Schultz said that Starbucks' social mission is especially important in 2017, at "a time when hate and violence, both at home and overseas, threaten our shared values". But Schultz does support some of Trump's campaign promises. Starbucks said it is helping to jump-start their careers by giving them their first job.

But Schultz said no matter what happens in Washington, Starbucks can weather the storm. Starbucks has now hired 40,000. "[It] gives me some comfort that not only do we have the opportunity, but we've got the leadership and a world-class leadership team to take us into the future".

"I'm committed to doing everything I can as a private citizen to try and elevate the national conversation about these issues", Schultz said. Opportunity youth are young people, often African American or Latino, who are not in school or are unemployed.

The public has long speculated whether Schultz will run for political office himself.

Johnson intends to carry on Schultz's tradition of balancing business with promoting social causes.

The company surpassed its goal to hire 10,000 veterans and military spouses by the 2018 deadline, and now plans to increase its hiring goal to 25,000 by 2025.

In January, the coffee chain had made a huge uproar in social media after it announced to hire 10,000 refugees globally in the next five years. Starbucks exceeded that goal also.

When asked about the discrepancy by Harlow, Schultz reiterated that Starbucks hasn't seen any negative blowback.

Johnson said Starbucks has already deployed measures to improve the customer experience and reduce congestion inside its stores.

"I could not be more optimistic, more excited, and more bullish about the opportunities that we have at a time in America where there is great uncertainty politically, where there's a seismic change in consumer behavior", he told Cramer.

Johnson said he's ready to take on the tall order of replacing Schultz, who is credited as the mastermind behind Starbucks' meteoric rise from small Seattle coffee shop to household name.

"All these things, I think, are part and parcel with building the kind of company that has a conscience", Schultz said.
