Help make the world a bee-friendlier place by planting wildflower seeds

Cereal manufacturer Cheerios is giving away millions of free wildflower seeds. Now, the cereal brand is taking action to save the bees by sending 100 million wildflower seeds to customers who sign up to help save the species on their website!

Recipients are asked to plant them in bee-friendly areas.

Cheerios sites facts on its website about declining bee populations, such as "42 percent of bee colonies in the USA collapsed in 2015" and "1 in 3 bites of food we eat is made possible by bees and other pollinators". Bees are necessary for food beyond just honey, including pollinating 70 out of the top 100 crops humans eat. And while some of us shudder at the thought of a fuzzy bee coming anywhere near us, they're part of a super intricate ecosystem that directly impacts the food system, so we need those little guys. "If managed with care, they can help us continue to produce billions of dollars in agricultural income and a wonderful diversity of nutritious food". Bees depend on wildflowers to grow and because of climate change, their supply is running out, leading to colony collapse.

As of 2016 the USA had already lost about 4.4 million of the 4.5 million honeybee colonies it had in 2006, Reuters reports. Habitat loss, disease, and pesticides have been speculated to play a role. Said General Mills Canada marketing director Emma Eriksson, "We have a bee as our mascot and honey in our product, so we thought somebody should be championing this cause, and we thought that we could be a great champion".
