Flint warns 31 more water customers: Pay up or lose service

Flint warns 31 more water customers: Pay up or lose service

-The state will provide the city with filter replacement cartridges so that residents will have free filter cartridges to use for one year after the replacement of their lead or galvanized steel water lines.

A federal judge approved a settlement in which the state will pay $87 million to the city to find and replace at least 18,000 unsafe water lines by 2020, according to the Detroit Free Press.

MI will provide $87 million in a combination of state and federal money, according to the settlement; $47 million of that must come from sources other than Obama-era federal water infrastructure improvement funds. MI will set aside $87 million for the repairs and hold an additional $10 million in reserve, if necessary. "For the first time, we've been able to have a federal court enforce the state to do the right thing, which is to replace the pipes that their agencies and their administration broke".

The city is now legally bound to replace all lead service lines in the next three years by securing $100 million in funding.

Mays and other plaintiffs said the settlement in the Flint case is proof that residents "have the power to force change" by seeking justice under the law when elected officials fail them.

The group sued Flint and MI on behalf of residents, along with the American Civil Liberties Union of MI. It will be presented to a judge on Tuesday for his approval.

The city is going after residential customers that haven't paid their water or sewer bills in more than a year, and have racked up past due accounts in the thousands of dollars.

Mets' Familia banned after domestic violence arrest
Mets third baseman Jose Reyes, then with the Rockies, received a 52-game suspension last season for violating the same policy. He also apologized to the Mets' organization, his teammates and his fans, and said he looked forward to rejoining the squad.

"We are thrilled that, after almost three years of grappling with lead-poisoned water, the residents of Flint can finally look forward to a long-term solution to a catastrophe that has devastated the community", said Michael J. Steinberg, legal director of the ACLU of MI and a member of the council representing plaintiffs on the case.

An agreement has been reached in a civil lawsuit involving the Flint Water Crisis.

The state must also expand a program created to help residents install tap filters in their homes, fund water monitoring programs and guarantee funding for seven existing medical programs created to treat residents for health problems associated with lead exposure. "We need to show the state that our residents are paying for services the city is providing".

Water from the lake was treated with anti-corrosion chemicals to protect the pipes.

On Tuesday, March 28, the state reached a settlement with residents and environmental groups in a case that drew national attention over the past year as residents without access to safe drinking water fought for home deliveries of bottled water and tap filters. As a result, lead leached from old pipes and fixtures.

"We have oversight. We get to be there every step of the way", Mays said, adding: "Until I get that "all clear" in my house, that trust won't be built until the pipes are out of the ground".

And while Overton did lash out at the state for its past actions, saying "they told us our water was safe when they knew it wasn't", he said it's time for the bitterness to end.
