Blind sacked as Dutch coach after World Cup flop

Netherlands has sacked coach Danny Blind following their World Cup qualifying loss to Bulgaria on Sunday which leaves them fourth on the table.

Blind took over as coach from Guus Hiddink in a bid to resuscitate the Dutch qualifying campaign for the 2016 European Championships in France but a shock home defeat to Iceland in his first match in charge quickly ended any possibility of a revival.

The Netherlands will hope to salvage some pride when they meet Italy in an global friendly at the Amsterdam ArenA on Tuesday, the first match since the sacking of manager Danny Blind.

And De Ligt was culpable for Bulgaria's fifth-minute opener, his failure to deal with a long ball capitalised on by Spas Delev for his first Bulgaria goal.

Bas Dost had a weak header saved by Mihaylov as the Netherlands were left contemplating missing a second successive major tournament having also failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

With injuries to regular defensive choices Virgil van Dijk, Jeffrey Bruma and Stefan de Vrij, Blind selected 17-year-old Ajax prospect Matthijs de Ligt for his debut at centre-back alongside Bruno Martins Indi. Netherlands skipper Arjen Robben said the defeat in Sofia was a "nightmare". So many "incidents" can not be mere coincidence and these poor results make Blind's parting shot sound delusional.

"We have respect for what Danny meant to us and the team during his tenure".

After the match Blind told journalists that the task of qualifying for Russian Federation had become harder and questioned whether he was still the man for the job.

"A foreign trainer is also an option". "We have a lot of players like Kevin Strootman, Georginio Wijnaldum and Bas Dost who are perfectly fine at a decent level and some of the younger players might do something spectacular in the future" says Jongsma.

"The list should include all kinds of names who can each take Dutch football forward", Decossaux said.

The first step to restoring faith in the Netherlands' World Cup hopes has to be winning this marquee friendly.
