Ford resurrects iconic Ranger, Bronco names

The new year is upon us and that means the North American International Auto Show is happening as well in Detroit, Michigan.

Ford will build both vehicles at its Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne. Namely, the automaker officially announced the return of the Ford Ranger pickup in 2019, followed by the Bronco in 2020.

The Bronco was Ford's flagship SUV from the late 1960s until it was canceled in 1996 and replaced with the Expedition.

A Ford spokesman confirmed to The Blade that the new Bronco will be body-on-frame vehicles, a more rugged design shared with the Toledo-built Jeep Wrangler.

Ford broke many hearts when it discontinued the Bronco over 20 years ago. Ford has confirmed that they will be bringing back the Ranger and the Bronco to North America. The Bronco is one of five new utility vehicles that will be produced by 2020.

On Monday, Trump tweeted "it's finally happening", and thanked Ford and Fiat Chrysler for the investments in the U.S.

The shuttles, which now operate in San Francisco and Austin, Texas, aim to fill the needs that bus and taxi services can't, and Ford said it will also help reduce traffic congestion. In 2015, both Bloomberg and The Detroit News reported that Ford's product planning team was considering the two models for a comeback.

"This is a no-compromise midsize 4x4 utility for the thrill-seekers who want freedom and off-road functionality, with the space and versatility of an SUV", he said.

The company's MI assembly plant will be responsible for USA production, but as yet there is no confirmation of a right-hand drive program.

This isn't exactly a surprise, thanks in part to a loose-lipped UAW boss letting slip earlier past year that the Bronco and Ranger will be built in MI.

The Ranger has been in production for several years in foreign markets, but it left the US market several years ago. That is why there are certain details (drivetrain combinations, price points) that I won't give more than a vague answer on - I know what direction it's heading, but those are details that, if leaked, would start a witch hunt.

While Ford announced intentions on releasing these vehicles, don't expect them to hit anytime soon.
