Royals on Christmas: George and Charlotte enjoy candy canes ... differently

It is the first time in almost 30-years that the monarch, the Governor of the Church of England, has missed the service, which she and her husband Prince Philip, 95, have attended every year since 1988.

Kate's family were also guests, with her parents, sister Pippa and brother James all smiles as they made their way into the church.

Michael Middleton, James Matthews and James Middleton arrive to attend the morning Christmas Day service at St Mark's Church in Englefield, Berkshire.

In a break from tradition, Kate Middleton and Prince William have chosen to spend the festive period with Kate's parents Michael and Carol Middleton in Bucklebury, rather than gather at the church service at the Sandringham estate with other members of the royal family.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent Christmas morning enjoying a church service in Berkshire with their two children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

In 2014, William and Kate were believed to have lunched with the Middletons before attending the Christmas Day church service with the royals.

She later went by helicopter once she had recovered a little, but was too unwell to go to church this year. According to Buckingham Palace, the Queen - who has not missed the Christmas Day service since 1988 - had stayed inside the house as a "precaution" but was well enough to join in festivities with the family in the afternoon.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh had delayed their trip to the private Sandringham estate by a day after they both became ill.

Meanwhile, William's family was attending church in Sandringham.
