Arizona Gov. Ducey Welcomes Uber's Self-Driving Pilot

Arizona Gov. Ducey Welcomes Uber's Self-Driving Pilot

"Our cars departed for Arizona this morning by truck", Uber said on Thursday in an e-mail.

A spokeswoman for Arizona Governor Doug Ducey told CNNMoney Uber already operates a self-driving vehicle program in Arizona.

When the app-based ride service launched its autonomous vehicle fleet in the city on December 14, it did so without proper permits for testing self-driving vehicles, and received immediate backlash from San Francisco cyclists: Allegations of the vehicles taking risky "right hook" turns raised concerns about whether the cars were ready for any permits at all.

Uber has advanced far more now with this next self-driving vehicle enterprise, serving as a giant leap for the auto company into the field of artificial intelligence. But in recent years, industry executives have found the regulations restrictive and opted to run at least some portion of their testing in states with no laws that address self-driving cars, such as Colorado and Pennsylvania, where Uber and its subsidiary Otto have conducted public-road tests.

USA charges Platinum Partners founder, others with $1 billion fraud
Platinum's management hid the red ink in part by claiming a position in Golden Gate Oil LLC was valued at roughly $170 million. Representatives for Platinum Partners and lawyers representing the company did not immediately return messages from CNNMoney.

They say that over 20 other companies now involved in testing self-driving vehicles in California have got a permit, which requires them to report any accidents to the authorities. Uber4, on the other hand, say they will not pay for that permit as they are not entirely autonomous.

Uber hasn't announced when the cars will be tested, nor provided details about how many vehicles will be heading to Arizona. "I appreciate the action that Uber has taken in the interest of public safety", said the DMV director. The company has announced it is moving its 16 prototypes across the state line to Phoenix, Arizona.

"Arizona welcomes Uber self-driving cars with open arms and wide open roads". Arizona is proud to be open for business. Ducey told Uber in a statement that "California may not want you, but we do", The Wall Street Journal reports. As a result, the cab hailing company was locked in a heated battle with the State's Attorney General's office. But it is staying firm on its stance that the company's driverless cars "must be tested responsibly". "That's nonsense. They just don't want to reveal how flawed and unsafe their robot cars are". While being a "strong supporter of innovation and autonomous vehicle development and testing", the mayor has stated that this comes second only to road safety.

Many technologists view self-driving autos as crucial to reducing transportation costs and saving lives because they hope they'll eliminate human error.
