China's Lenovo to strike deal with Fujitsu to acquire PC business

China's Lenovo to strike deal with Fujitsu to acquire PC business

An alliance with Fujitsu would give Lenovo, the world's biggest PC maker, a bigger foundation to expand its share.

On Thursday, the Fujitsu shares increased by 7%, in comparison with Lenovo who reported a 2% growth.

Japan's Nikkei share average rose for a fourth straight session on Thursday as a weaker yen boosted investors' risk appetite, while Fujitsu Ltd surged after a report that Lenovo is taking over Fujitsu's computer business.

The two companies aim to reach a deal this month, with some 2,000 Fujitsu workers likely move to Lenovo, Reuters said, citing a report from the Nikkei business daily.

In February, Fujitsu spun off its personal computer and smartphone businesses into two separate companies, Fujitsu Client Computing and Fujitsu Connected Technologies.

Thailand detains Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong
Immigration officials confirmed to Reuters that Wong was prevented from entering Thailand and would be sent back to Hong Kong. Thailand has been criticised for returning asylum seekers back to China, including more than 100 Uighur Muslims a year ago .

The deal would let Fujitsu focus on IT services and other businesses, and will make Fujitsu the second Japanese PC maker to go to Lenovo for help. The deal will not only allow Lenovo to offload its personal computing business to Fujitsu to a certain extent, it will embark upon a cost saving strategy by culling as many as 3,200 jobs to save as much as $1.35 billion annually. A proposal to merge Fujitsu's PC business with Vaio and Toshiba's computer division fell apart earlier this year.

But those hopes faded long ago amid competition from less-expensive Chinese brands, and Fujitsu's last remaining bastion was its shrinking home market of Japan. Fujitsu subsequently took control of the company in 1990.

Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo's chairman and chief executive, said in July that the company was "working to keep the PC business as our cash cow".

Lenovo, which is battling it out for the global PC top spot with HP, is no stranger to big acquisitions in the space, having acquired IBM's ThinkPad business in 2005 and the PC business unit of NEC in 2011.
