Uber's self-driving cars are available to hire in Pittsburgh

Uber's self-driving cars are available to hire in Pittsburgh

The race to get self-driving cars on the road is swallowing up a whole lot of investment dollars and Uber's latest move, which is essentially a large-scale real world experiment, could accelerate the arrival of the autonomous auto to the consumers.

Uber wants to make self-driving cars as viable alternatives to vehicle ownership in future cities. It plans to bring it down to one technician, still behind the wheel, before switching to fully automated driving.

In the future, Uber believes self-driving cars will operate 24/7.

If other riders have a similar reaction, and the autonomous cars are able to handle all the challenges Pittsburgh offers, including snowstorms, rolling hills and a tangled network of aging roads and bridges, then the self-driving vehicle will be one step closer to going from science fiction to a realistic option for travelers.

Ford recently announced plans for a fully driverless auto for use in ride-hailing and car-sharing programmes by 2021.

Others, like Mercedes-Benz, are adding autonomous features in phases.

The vehicles themselves are equipped with a carload of contraptions to help it maneuver the busy streets of Pittsburg, including traffic light sensors, 3D-mapping lasers, and a weather detection system, ABC News reports. "This technology needs to be ultra-reliable before we can take the human out of the driving equation".

"We actually think of Pittsburgh as the double black diamond of driving", Krikorian said.

When I'm in London, I heavily depend on Uber.

Uber isn't only capturing routes, but also snapping photos. But a safety driver will ride shotgun for now.

The announcement was made via the company's newsroom site where it mentions that this pilot and real-world testing is critical to the success of the technology.

"Uber is in the race to get driverless cars on the road first", said technology writer and broadcaster Kate Bevan. Mostly this is because of the current limits of self-driving software.
