SwiftKey adds neural network word predictions to its flagship keyboard app

SwiftKey adds neural network word predictions to its flagship keyboard app

"For the first time since we launched SwiftKey Keyboard six years ago, we've rebuilt SwiftKey's language engine from the ground up using the power of neural network technology - the first instance of neural networks being used locally on a smartphone".

On Thursday, Microsoft released a new version of its SwiftKey for Android that includes an AI technology called a neural network to try to improve its performance.

The company says the neural network model will soon make its way over to the keyboard that it makes for iOS as well.

Fed's intervention on pipeline project unprecedented
Company guards employed dogs and pepper spray against protesters who fought back with sticks and poles. The protest led to violent clashes last weekend, when campers confronted pipeline workers.

Artificial neural networks are created to mimic the human brain and are generally trained with masses of data to build up experiences that make them useful at handling specific tasks without relying on programmed instructions. For example, if SwiftKey has previously recognized the phrase, "Let's meet at the airport", SwiftKey Neural Alpha will be able to assume that "office" or "hotel" are similar words that could also be appropriate predictions in place of "airport". The feature is now available as an update through Google Play. This helps the app to make sense of sentences, and is meant to make it better at predicting the next word a user plans to type or at autocorrecting a word as it is typed, the company said in a blog post. To oversimplify, the difference is that SwiftKey now looks at more than just the previous two words in your sentence - and better understands the entire context of what you're typing. Now, it might also become the "smartest" keyboard available, as it is now powered by neural networks for better word predictions. Several examples on the SwiftKey blog point to how the keyboard attempts to finish off sentences and phrases that are more likely to finish off your sentence in the way that you'd want.

Starting today, keyboard app SwiftKey will be running on a neural network.

The neural network technology was first used in an early experimental prototype, announced last October. However, other language models would also get the same feature subsequently.
