Nikon adds two KeyMission wearable cameras

Nikon is set to step into the 4K 360-degree market with a new range of ruggedised cameras that will retail for significantly less than the $644 360 fly model now being sold at JB HI Fi.

The KeyMission 170 is your classic GoPro-style action camera that records UHD video, while the KeyMission 80 is basically a rugged life-logging device - a mobile phone with just the video capturing capabilities for consumers.

The company has launched new cameras in the Keymission series, namely KeyMission 170 and KeyMission 80. We'll find out soon enough when both cameras are released later this year.

The KeyMission 360, KeyMission 170 and KeyMission 80 will be available by November 2016.

On the front is a 12MP 1/2.3inch sensor with a 4.5mm lens, which effectively captures a 80-degree angle of view and 25mm field of view in an equivalent 35mm format.

The ultra-slim KeyMission 80 is a wearable camera designed for quick shooting of stills and movies.

And out of the box, the KeyMission 360 is waterproof to 30 metres, shockproof up to half a metre, it can also be operated in temperatures as cold as 14 degrees Fahrenheit which makes it ideal for skiing.

First unveiled at CES 2016, the Nikon KeyMission 360 is the first camera of its kind from Nikon that's capable of capturing 4K UHD video in 360-degrees. There's a LCD on the back of the device that will enable users to easily frame shots in live view and adjust settings. There's a second lens on the back, a wider 90-degree (22mm equivalent) f/2.2 prime with a 5MP sensor-that's there for the selfie crowd.

For more advanced editing functions, new KeyMission 360/170 utility software for PC and Mac allows is included.

The Nikon KeyMission 170 features a 170-degree f/2.8 lens with 8.3 megapixel CMOS sensor to capture video in 4K UHD or 1080p.

Of course, as an action camera it's also created to withstand a couple of dings and survive in inhospitable environments, including water up to 33-feet (10m) deep, falls from 6.6-feet (2m) and chilly temperature as low as 14-degrees Fahrenheit (-10-degrees Centigrade).

Nikon said the KeyMission 360 is compatible with a variety of optional mounts and accessories.

Apart from being dustproof, Nikon KeyMission 170 is coldproof up to -10 degree celsius. It has a rounded rectangular body, with the f2.8 lens offset to the side. Announced today, the line is set to go on sale in October and will feature three different cameras, ranging from options that are good for those who are looking for a more entry-level device to one that's aimed at those who want a fully-featured action camera.

The Nikon KeyMission will arrive later this October for $399 (about £305, AU$530).
