Gordie Howe, Known as 'Mr. Hockey,' Dies at 88

Gordie Howe, Known as 'Mr. Hockey,' Dies at 88

This column first appeared in the October 22, 1994 edition of The Citizen and is being republished in the wake of Howe's death.

Howe is survived by four children and nine grandchildren. He was mean as a rattlesnake and you treaded lightly when you came around him.

Now the Tampa Bay Lightning vice president and general manager, Yzerman said it was an honor to wear the same uniform as Howe.

You see, Gordie Howe has a special place in my life because my parents - well, actually my dad - named me after him.

Daley played professionally from 1963-79 for the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings, and finished with the WHA's Winnipeg Jets.

Gretzky tweeted that he was sending "thoughts and prayers to the Howe family and to the millions of hockey fans who like me loved Gordie Howe".

"We don't have those type of people anymore, I don't think, around". His name graces a peculiar statistic that hockey fans adore - the "Gordie Howe hat trick" - when one player scores a goal, earns an assist, and gets in a fight all in one game.

Another son Murray, 16, plays junior hockey in Toronto.

Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio: "I just know him as a legend".

Don Atchison says flags are being lowered to half-mast out of respect for Howe, who was born in Saskatchewan and grew up in the city.

Red Wings legend Gordie Howe passed away after battling severe health issues for years, including a stroke in 2014.

And in the winter, we played hours of shinny hockey in a frozen back eddy on the river behind our house or on the frozen ponds in the hollows of the fields that surrounded our small farm.

USA confirms 2 al-Shabab leaders killed in Somalia operations
What Halgan, and El Adde, and Janaale, and Lego have taught us is that the mission is not yet in a position to protect itself. In the past, casualty figures cited by al Shabaab have been much higher than official numbers.

"When Gordie came into the NHL, hockey was a Canadian game".

Gordie Howe, who dominated the sport of hockey for so long that he became known simply as "Mr. Hockey", died this morning, the Detroit Red Wings confirmed. "Old school hockey. That was Gordie Howe".

That includes a 41-point season in the National Hockey League at the age of 51 during the 1979-80 season with the Hartford Whalers. Esposito found that out the hard way the first time he faced Mr. Howe, who has died at age 88.

He wouldn't quit until he scored that goal.

What I love about Howe is the way he was not only an excellent skater and goal-scorer, but he was probably one of the toughest guys, if not the toughest, dressed in the lineup.

He chuckled and said, "Yeah, they told me that". She helped him live his dream of playing professional hockey with sons Mark and Marty in the World Hockey Association.

Former Red Wings player Kris Draper calls Gordie Howe an "an absolute throwback". "If I'm physically fit, it could sway me to play another year, but I was never in more pain than I was last year".

But he never imagined playing seven seasons of professional hockey with them. "I asked Normie (Ullman) how and he just said 'Gordie'".

"So Windsor is where it all began", he said.

Yeah, a kid could have a worse hero.

And speaking of Gretzky, the SI Vault has this fantastic picture of Howe with a then 11-year-old Gretzky.
