Florida renaming football field after Steve Spurrier

Florida renaming football field after Steve Spurrier

Steve Spurrier is a pretty well-known name in the city of Gainesville as he played and coached the Florida Gators. He won 86 games in 11 years with the Gamecocks before resigning midway through the 2015 season. During his time in Florida, Spurrier won one national championship in 1997 and played for another the year prior.

"We feel this was an appropriate way to commemorate one the most legendary figures in Gator athletics history", UF athletic director Jeremy Foley said in a statement.

Steve Spurrier will now have a permanent place at the University of Florida.

Spurrier coached the Gators to six Southeastern Conference championships and the 1996 national title in 12 seasons at his alma mater.

The winningest head coach in Florida Gator football history will now have his name added to Florida Field. It will be the Exactech Arena at the O'Connell Center.

Golden State Warriors vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Game 2 preview
Despite Thursday night's seeming snooze-fest, it was actually a lot closer than the final score indicated. Fellow reserve Leandro Barbosa made five for five timely shots, while Andre Iguodala had 12 points .

Spurrier said it is a special honor to have his name on the stadium where so many memories were made as a player and coach. Spurrier coached at Florida from 1990-2001 before leaving for a job with the NFL's Washington Redskins.

It was a sour way for one of the greatest college football coaches to go out, but my hope is now that he's retired, we'll see the Head Ball Coach working with the media much more and staying a part of the game that he's been a part of for so long and helped make it what it is. The Gators won, won big and won with swagger.

The name change will be made official at a ceremony that will include Spurrier during the Gators' opener against MA on September 3.

Spurrier famously named Ben Hill Griffen Stadium with that nickname during his first years as coach, in a way to get Florida back in the spotlight. Us coaches and players thoroughly enjoyed playing in front of our fans. We won a bunch of them there and only lost five and they were close ones.
