Djokovic finally wins French Open, beating Murray in final

Djokovic finally wins French Open, beating Murray in final

Serbia's Novak Djokovic reacts after winning the men's final match against Britain's Andy Murray at the Roland Garros 2016 French Tennis Open in Paris.

"Whether or not I can reach a calendar slam, that's still a possibility".

The world number one recalled going through a range emotions en route to rounding off his come-from-behind four-set triumph over Andy Murray and was particularly complimentary of the crowd for their support after his loss to Stan Wawrinka past year. Roger Federer, now ranked third, holds the all-time record with 17.

Murray, who beat Djokovic in the Rome Masters finals on clay last month, went on to win the set when his opponent netted a backhand.

Asked on Sunday whether he feels he has now stepped out from under the shadow of Federer and Nadal, the world number one said: "Well, I don't think it's on me to judge that".

"I'm very disappointed. You know, from 13 days ago, I maybe would have signed to have been in this position".

"When I broke him the second time and I got to 5-2 in the fourth, I just started laughing. I'm very proud, very thrilled", he said on becoming the third man after Don Budge and Laver to hold the Wimbledon, US, Australian and French Open titles simultaneously.

But his 12 majors - six in Australia, three at Wimbledon, two at the US Open and now one in Paris - have taken him to within five of Federer's record of 17 while he is just two off the 14 held by Nadal and Pete Sampras.

"What Novak's achieved in the last 12 months is phenomenal, winning all the Grand Slams in one year is an incredible achievement", Murray said.

This was the first time Murray had reached the French Open final and he has now lost five Grand Slam championship matches to Djokovic and eight of the 10 he has played in.

Turkish president Erdogan to attend Muhammad Ali funeral
While Muhammad Ali was concerned over his daughter's boxing career at first, she pressed on. It was also very clear in the interview that Laila was at peace with her father's death.

Coach Marian Vajda felt this may have been Novak Djokovic's last chance to win a maiden French Open title.

"We only played twice on grass - I won both those matches", said Murray.

"I have played some of my best tennis on clay over the past few weeks". A victory for Djoker - would also complete a career grand slam. Later on I realised that in life everything happens for a reason. Right now I just try to enjoy this experience of winning the trophy that I never won before'.

Novak Djokovic was finally crowned at Roland Garros after winning an encounter between top two seed over Andy Murray on Sunday to round up a career Grand Slam. He needs to win this year's Wimbledon and U.S. Open to achieve tennis' most impressive feat.

Often accused of trying too hard to be liked, Djokovic became adored in the French capital for the one time he did not try hard enough.

Djokovic's two most recent Wimbledon titles have come at the expense of 17-time Grand Slam victor Federer.

'Now Novak is 29 and, when you get older, your nerves are not that great.

"I guess I've got a few more years to try and do that", Murray said.

For Murray the result was another defeat at the hands of Djokovic, his fifth in a major final and his 24th in all tournaments.
