Dempsey, Zardes lead US over Ecuador 2-1, into Copa semis

Clint Dempsey struck again as the United States powered through to the semi-finals of the Copa America Centenario on Thursday (Friday in Manila) in a stormy 2-0 win over Ecuador that saw both sides finish with 10 men.

U.S. have booked their place in the semi-final of the Copa America Centenario after beating Ecuador in their last eight clash at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Friday.

Seven minutes into the second half, Ecuador's Antonio Valencia was ejected for his second yellow card, following a foul against Alejandro Bedoya near the team benches.

The Hornets defender started at right-back in a 4-2-3-1 formation but his side were up against it from the 22nd minute when Clint Dempsey headed in his 52nd goal for the U.S. following a Jermaine Jones cross. The 33-year-old collected his 52nd global goal, now just five behind Landon Donovans American record.

Manchester United star Antonio Valencia endured a torrid evening as Ecuador crashed out of the Copa America in a fiery 2-1 quarter-final defeat against the United States.

Michael Arroyo scored for Ecuador in the 74th minute, making for a tense ending, and Enner Valencia missed a pair of great chances moment later on a pair of headers. US coach Jurgen Klinsmann will have some big lineup decisions to make no matter who his team plays, as he will be without Jones, Jersey native Alejandro Bedoya (second yellow) and Bobby Wood (second yellow).

Stoke City defender Cameron starred as the usa beat Ecuador 2-1 in Seattle last night and they are now waiting to find out who they will face in Houston on Tuesday. Matt Besler subbed in place of Yedlin and played rather well in his place.

Wood had been forced wide of goal and it seemed the move would break down, but he made the right decision by feeding Jones, who put the ball on a plate for Dempsey. Later, he set up Gyasi Zardes, taking a shot at the far post that Zardes redirected into the goal.

"We're going to keep pushing", said Dempsey, who has been one of the best players in the entire tournament with three goals and three assists, told Fox Sports 1. They will next face off against the victor of Argentina and Venezuela. The U.S. dominated play early against Ecuador, the world's 13th-ranked team, before finally cashing in on Dempsey's opening goal in the 22nd minute. He crossed into the penalty area, where Dempsey had completed his run from midfield and beat Juan Paredes to the ball, directing it to the corner of the net past goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez from 8 yards. Plus, it's that striker mentality.

Ecuador laid siege to the USA goal and in a frantic finish saw manager Gustavo Quinteros given a red card from the touchline. Arroyo's goal came off Walter Ayovi's free kick from a flank. Enner Valencia almost equalized moments later, placing his header at the near post just wide of Guzan's goal. "More special than what we've already done", he said.

"I really hope the country gets behind us for the semi-final".
