Carter hits Russia for attacking US-backed Syrian rebels

Officials said the cable is unlikely to alter Obama's current policy on Syria, as the White House remains opposed to deeper USA military involvement in the conflict, Reuters news agency reported.

"Dozens" of top State officials have signed a document "protesting" U.S. policy in Syria for being focused on fighting ISIS.

Such a move would be a radical change in policy for President Obama, who has focused US military operations in the country on targeting the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The crisis in Syria has sent millions of refugees all over Europe and now we are bringing in hundreds of refugees each week.

More than 50 State Department officials rebuked the Obama administration's Syria policy in an internal letter that urges for military strikes against the government of President Bashar al-Assad for persistent ceasefire violations.

Elsewhere, Russian fighter jets continued to strike Syrian rebels - some backed by the U.S. - near al-Tanf, in southern Syria. Obama, backed by his military leaders, has raised questions about what would happen if Assad was forced out.

A former senior USA official said disclosure of a document of this type - the final version of which is classified - "corrodes the trust between the president and those who serve him".

The Journal said the document called for "targeted air strikes".

Obama's blistering attack on Donald Trump over Muslim comments
The presumed gunman was an American-born citizen whose parents came to the United States from Afghanistan more than 30 years ago. But Trump's own remarks about members of the media may have crossed a line, the full effects of which are yet to be seen.

To respond to Assad's repeated violations of a ceasefire, the diplomats called for "a judicious use of stand-off and air weapons, which would undergird and drive a more focused and hard-nosed USA -led diplomatic process".

Signatories of the cable consider policy action against Syria to be largely a failure over the last five years. "The status quo in Syria will continue to present increasingly dire, if not disastrous, humanitarian, diplomatic and terrorism-related challenges".

Several U.S. officials said that while the White House is prepared to hear the diplomats' dissenting viewpoint, it is not expected to spur any changes in President Barack Obama's approach to Syria in his final seven months in office. Kerry, a forceful advocate of Obama's initial plan to launch airstrikes after Assad's use of chemical weapons, reversed course after the president opted against them.

“ there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist Principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime, which is considered the strategic depth of the Shia expansion (Iraq and Iran).”.

Secretary of State John Kerry, visiting Copenhagen, told Reuters on Friday: "It's an important statement and I respect the process, very, very much".

Experts reportedly opine that, "In a nutshell, the group would like to see a military option put forward to put some pressure... on the regime".

The cable warns that the U.S.is losing prospective allies among Syrias majority Sunni population in its fight against the Sunni extremist group Islamic State while the regime “continues to bomb and starve” them.
